Had to Have Been There

Last Night's Collage
"This one uses two postcards, one of a Burning Man scene, sent to me by the poet Fred Chappell, and the other a Black Mountain College card from Hazel Archer Larson show. I conflated them then glued them on a section from a reject Ray Johnson poster. Used old Life magazine images from Kennedy's assassination issue, pieces of paper in my art box. I was hoping to explore this idea of being in a cool place, part of a scene. Ray in East Village, Ray at Black Mountain, the 60s hipster scene, etc. Even the Kennedy memorial was a happening scene, though a traumatized and sad one. It's also, using title as diving board, a joke on collage making. It all seems so special as you're doing it--at least when it feels good in the process--but in the morning you never know. The artifact is always a little lacking. I do like how the tipped over ampersand looks like an infinity symbol or some strange Greek letter. The in crowd is always saying, "yes, & what next?!""
